A study on municipal solid waste management in Ukraine, summary of key findings
One of the key components of a country’s overall environmental and resource efficiency framework is its municipal solid waste (MSW) management system.
Inefficient MSW treatment in Ukraine today has negative environmental impacts and results in the excessive use of raw materials and energy.
If Ukraine were to optimize its MSW management policy and implement modern technologies it could, by 2025, secure an environmentally safe MSW management system and recover up to 40 percent of waste. By 2025, therefore, more than 60 million metric tons of MSW could be recovered for use as raw materials and energy rather than being sent to landfill. This would require an investment of up to €13 billion and generate an additional €300 million in revenues from recoverable fractions.
Some necessary improvements to the MSW management system are already being discussed and implemented by experts and officials at the national and sub-national levels.
