Aquaculture, the fresh or saltwater cultivation of aquatic plants and animals for food and other purposes, has become a complex and diverse subsector. Largely dominated by small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the past, the industry is now expanding with large investments being made by specialist corporations.
IFC has invested in several aquaculture projects with a current portfolio of about $7 million, primarily in the shrimp sector.
