Environmental and Social Specialists

The Environment and Social Development Department (CES) at IFC is home to a diverse set of professionals who strive to ensure the institution's work is beneficial to human development and the natural environment.

Environment and Social Development specialists appraise potential IFC investment projects to identify risks and enhance outcomes, ensure compliance with IFC safeguard policies and guidelines, mobilize technical and financial support for clients through trust funds and IFC facilities, work with investment companies to address environmental and community aspects of their business plans, produce and disseminate good practices and lessons learned from IFC's work around the globe, and provide training on environmental and social management systems to IFC financial sector borrowers.

The department also employs Investment Officers and Projects Officers who implement innovative environmental projects in sectors ranging from energy efficiency to clean water to sustainable resource use. These staff members support mainstream IFC investments as well as developing projects funded by other sources, such as the Global Environment Facility, the Environmental Opportunities Facility, and carbon finance facilities.

In addition, our Insurance Officers have expertise in the global insurance industry to guide IFC's investment teams and clients on the proper levels of insurance to effectively mitigate risks.
