What we do
IFC's Environmental, Social, and Trade (EST) Standards teams work with firms to increase their access to markets by setting, adopting, and deploying internationally-recognized standards that address environmental and social issues in different sectors. Examples of these issues include harmful child labor, gender-appropriate labor practices, biodiversity protection and sustainable land management. Implementing certification schemes will help actors in the supply chain improve their environmental and social performance in a cost-effective manner.
How we do it
IFC works with firms, as well as industries, to increase the adoption of standards to:
-
Demonstrate to firms the benefits of better standards,
-
Raise awareness of standards among firms, governments, and NGOs,
-
Train firms and their supply chains on adopting better standards,
-
Train third-party service providers on standards,
-
Develop and refining standards on an ongoing basis,
-
Clarify codes of practice in a particular industry, which reduces the overall risk of investing in that industry. (The sectors chosen are the most risky ones and have an important development impact, such as palm oil in Indonesia).
