Increasing our water efficiency is an important component of IFC's sustainability commitment as an institution.
In our largest office in Washington, DC, we used 26 million gallons of water in FY12. Water efficiency measures are allowing us to save over 4.8 million gallons of water annually, and over $43,000. Examples of how we achieve this include:
- Replace all water closet (toilet) flush valves from 4.5 gallons/flush to low-flow fixtures 1.6 gallons/flush;
- Install flow reduction hardware on 235 faucets changing flow from 2.2 gpm (gallons per minute) to 0.5 gpm;
- Install flow reduction hardware on 20 shower heads to reduce flow from 2.5 gpm to 1.6 gpm;
- Install flow reduction hardware on 32 pantry sick faucets to reduce flow from 2.2 gpm to 1.6 gpm;
- Install flow reduction hardware on 64 urinals to reduce flow from 1 gpm to .5 gpm;
- Install rain sensors to reduce automatic watering of landscaped vegetation based on actual rainfall.

72% of IFC offices that reported in a year-end survey are taking water conservation measures such as eliminating bottled water, installing sink aerators and/or dual flush toilets.
