Hydropower is the most established and cost-competitive of all renewable energy technologies. Hydropower generates energy from the force of moving water with the fall or flow determining the amount of energy generated. Hydropower projects are generally time- and cost-intensive, particularly for larger projects, which can also have environmental and social considerations.
IFC has been investing in hydropower projects since 1991, making this the largest renewables technology on our portfolio. IFC has played a key role in bringing many hydro projects to fruition, providing long tenors to match the life of the asset and taking on construction risk that traditional banks are reluctant to contemplate. Drawing from many years of experience in the sector, IFC works to ensure the best environmental and social practices for projects, favoring run-of-river designs that minimize or avoid flooding land.
